Full Description

If you like any of the following then you’re in for a treat on this trip! Surfing, beaches, chilled but fun nightlife, cocktails, great views and stunning sunsets….Peniche/Baleal in Portugal has it all, and we’re staying at a great hotel just 400m from the surf beach.

In our continued tour of European surf destinations we’re heading to one of the most well known, Peniche/Baleal, about an hour from Lisbon and home to the famous Supertubos beach, as well as an impressive variety of other surf spots, crammed into just a few kilometers of coast.

It’s not just about the surfing. If you like a nice sunny beach break within a surfy/chilled out town, some stunning local surroundings (like the Berlangos archipelago detailed below). or just some chill out time at the hotel’s spa, then this is for you too!

We’re staying in Baleal which is a very short bus/taxi from Peniche, as it’s a bit nearer the more forgiving surf beaches, plus has a nicer vibe with beach bars for the evenings. We will no doubt also head to Peniche for an evening too, and check out the food and atmosphere there too.

Add in the essential ingredient of a warm and friendly group of people and you’ve got a fantastic trip in store!

As in previous years the plan is to head out on the Friday and back on Monday evening, giving us 4 days to enjoy the area whilst only taking 2 days off work.

Cost – £240 members/£275 non-members*. To include 3 nights twin room accommodation on a b&b basis (we’ll pair you up appropriately), transfers to and from Lisbon airport, and an 8th Day Adventure host to manage it all for you once out there. Surf lessons and hire are not included, but we will arrange them all for you, in advance in the case of lessons, so please let us know upon booking if you’d like these. There is a surf centre on site to make things nice and easy.

*PLEASE NOTE – as we are a small organisation it is difficult to work with highly volatile exchange rates. Rather than try to hedge our bets and price this to avoid risk, we are pricing this based on current rates. As such if the GBP falls significantly against the Euro (more than £10 as far as the cost of this trip is concerned) then the conditions of booking the trip will confirm you agree to make up any shortfall. On the other hand, we agree that if the pound rises, making the trip cheaper by more than £10pp, then we will put this into a kitty to be spent appropriately on your behalf once out there. Hopefully that is fair to everyone! :-)

Food – as we like to explore what the local town has to offer on these trips, we will book restaurants accordingly once out there for dinners and lunches, which are at own cost.

TO BOOK – please ‘register interest’ at the top of the page and we will email you with payment information.

FLIGHTS – please do NOT book until we give the go ahead, as below:

There are various flights to Lisbon from Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton, and we will liaise with the group once we give the go ahead to book them, in order that we all get the same transfer.

The Hotel (taken from their website, and with a Tripadvisor certificate of excellence):
At RIDE, Resort Peniche – Baleal, Portugal, everything has been designed to make your stay in Portugal unforgettable. Only 1 hour from Lisbon, you have all the amenities on site. Equipped with an outdoor swimming pool, a Spa, a gym, a restaurant, a skatepark and a climbing wall, our establishment is also ideally located – 4 minutes walk from the beach – to take your first lessons in our surf school or to improve your skills if you are an experienced surfer, or even just to relax and enjoy the sunshine. It also features some pretty quirky/bright room decor, with spacious twin rooms (with a bunk bed too, as they can be used as family rooms, but we can ignore those).

In a quiet location – slightly secluded – only 3 minutes walk from the beach, Ride resort promotes a healthy lifestyle through all the services and facilities. Our resort features Restaurant and bars to keep the body nourished and a Gym & Spa, to help the mind to relax while your body works out.

OUT & ABOUT

Berlengas 20 minutes from the PENICHE – BALEAL Resort
Ask the reception to prepare you for a shuttle from the Resort. The fantastic Berlengas archipelago is only a 20-minute boat ride from Peniche and consists of three small groups of islands : Berlenga Grande, Estelas and Farilhões-Forcadas. The translucent waters, the wealth of fauna and flora and the various underwater “treasures” make this place a natural sanctuary, ideal for diving. The islands have a unique ecosystem in the world, with their own fauna and flora, which were recognized with the creation of the Berlenga Nature Reserve in 1981. The largest and most important island, Berlenga Grande is the only one that can be visited and only during the bathing season (May to September).

The Obidos Village 25 km away
The picturesque village of Óbidos is one of the oldest medieval villages in Portugal. Just 25 km from Peniche, a well-preserved castle is within the walls of Óbidos, where you can walk through a maze of narrow streets, white houses and magnificent churches, surrounded by vestiges of different civilizations. Many good examples of civil and religious architecture from the golden age of this village, are another reason for a visit. Óbidos is also known for the various socio-cultural events held throughout the year. The Medieval Fair (July/August) provides a fantastic experience for visitors, who can feel and live the customs and traditions of the Medieval Period, making them feel that they have traveled in time. Other events such as the Chocolate Fair, the Holy Week or the Christmas Village, make the visit to this wonderful village even more worthwhile. The traditional drink of the region is “Ginjinha”, a sour cherry liqueur served in a glass of chocolate, which will make this experience even sweeter.
